Abstract

Chia seeds, scientifically referred to as Salvia hispanica L. seeds, are a type of oilseed recognized as pseudo-cereals. Given their abundance of macronutrients, micronutrients, and health aids, chia seeds can be classification as a nutraceutical food. This seeds may contain an important amount of phenolic substances such as rosmarinic acid, caffeine acids, protocatechuic acid, and myricetin . Results from studies reveal that chia seeds contain a significant amount of proteins (17–25%), fibers (30–35%), and various lipids. Moreover, chia seeds encompass a diverse array of vitamins and minerals, and they have been shown to confer advantageous effects in treatment  diabetes, hypertension, and cholesterol. In addition to their antioxidants, anxiety-reducing, laxatives , anti-depressant, and pain relieving effects, chia seeds can serve as an immune function enhancer. Their health benefits have recently garnered the interest of numerous food companies and academic institutions. This review study discusses the nutritional composition, phytochemical characteristics, and medicinal potentials of the plant. The potential benefits encompass cardioprotective attributes, glycemic regulation, and immunological augmentation.
