Abstract

The amniotic membrane is a source of two types of stem cells, epithelial and mesenchymal, which show many characteristics of the embryonic stem cells(ESCs) and this promoted researchers to study the characteristics of both cells in detail, hoping to be an alternative source of ESCs because their study and applications in cellular therapy have raised conflicting views for some reasons and ethical considerations. The two cells are different in appearance  and embryonic origin. Some studies have focused on the comparisons between the properties of mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)  derived from the amniotic membrane and the MSCs derived from different sources, but did not shed light on the comparison of their characteristics with epithelial stem cells. Therefore, the present literature review is concerned with comparing their neurological properties and their ability to form blood vessels As this comparison may provide approach  for studying the biology of each type of stem cells isolated from the amniotic membrane precisely, which in turn facilitates their employments in the clinical applications.
